It would not surprise me if Thunderkick has been a little inspired by the Russian doll Matryoshka when they made this slot machine named Babushkas. This is a fun slot where symbols can upgrade during the base game to become higher paying symbols. It almost works like the symbol upgrading feature that can be won on the slot machine Evolution from NetEnt. There's a wild mystery feature that can reward you with one of these three different features: Scare Bear, Charm Bear or Dance Bear. Each of the bears give you different kind of advantages such as: Low value upgrades, all values upgrade or a free spin feature. The free spin feature is really cool, as it guarantees you a wild symbol for each of the spins. The maximal win is stated to be 390x the stake, but I can’t really figure out how that make sense. As a full screen of the best symbols only pays 34x the stake, and then gets an upgrade to another 100x the stake. The payout percentage is just getting lower and lower for Thunderkick, and Babushkas pays back 95.80% of the total bets.

Game features

Before we take a look at the features, I would like to explain a bit about the symbol upgrades that can take place after any winning spin. The doll symbols on Babushkas are ranked after size, the bigger the dolls are, the less the pay. If you get a winning combination during the base game, the pays might be upgraded if the doll that's one size smaller than the winning doll will create a better win. This means that if you win with the largest doll and the second largest doll would have created a better win connected to the same combination, the symbols will be upgraded. This will continue as long as a symbol one size smaller than the current win can make a better combination. If you want to lean more, the paytable shows a good explanation on how the symbols upgrade from one to another.

Babushkas has a wild symbol on reel number 3. This symbol will substitute for all other symbols in play, and it can also trigger one of the three bonus features available in the game. When the wild symbol appears, it will spin around and stop with a W or a Star + W in view. If it shows a W, it works like a normal wild symbol, while if it shows a Star + W, it will trigger one of the wild features. The three features I'm talking about are: Scare Bear, Charm Bear and Dance Bear. The two first features are upgrading the exciting symbols in different ways, while the third feature activates the free spin feature. There is also a Wipe feature that will activate if you fill the entire screen with the same symbol.

Wipe feature: If you manage to fill the entire screen with the same symbol, the wipe feature is awarded. This feature will change all the symbols into the next paying symbol on the paytable. With other words, a prize upgrade. For example, if you have the 3rd best symbol all over the screen, it will be upgraded to the 2nd best paying symbol. If you manage to fill the screen with the best paying symbol, the wipe feature will transform those symbols into ghost symbols. These symbols pay a prize of 100x the stake.

Scare Bear feature: The Scare Bear can be triggered by the spinning wild symbol and it can appear in 3 sizes: Small, medium and large. The small bear will upgrade the largest sized visible symbol to a symbol one size smaller. The medium bear will do the same, but it will repeat the process one extra time. The large bear will do the same as the previous bears, but it will repeat the process a total of 2 times. After the upgrades, the symbols might upgrade again if any of the connected symbols that are one size smaller can create a better winning combination.

Charm Bear feature: The Charm Bear can also be triggered by the spinning wild symbol and it will upgrade all symbols in view one level. If this creates a winning combination, the normal upgrading process will continue if a better win is possible.

Dance Bear feature / Free spins: Like the other features, the Dance Bear is also triggered by the spinning wild symbol. This bear will reward you with 7 free spins, and during these spins the wild symbol is guaranteed to appear on each spin. This will make it possible to trigger any of the different bear features on every single spin. This includes the Dance Bear, that will reward you with 7 additional spins.
